Performer Notes
  • This unlicensed British compilation presents recordings made by Betty Hutton in the 1940s and '50s that were released originally on Capitol, MGM, and RCA Victor Records, making it unlikely such a collection could be assembled in the U.S., where the various copyright holders wouldn't want to pool their resources. The Xtra imprint of Delta Music Group is blissfully unconcerned with such issues, relying on the 50-year limit on copyright in Europe simply to master the tracks off old vinyl discs and press up CDs without regard to the companies that recorded and released the material initially. Of course, as usual, that procedure results in uneven sound, with some tracks noticeably muffled, and the final track of the disc has its ending clipped off. All of Hutton's Billboard singles chart entries of the period are included, among them her chart-topper "Doctor, Lawyer, Indian Chief," the gold-selling "I Wish I Didn't Love You So," and her signature song "His Rocking Horse Ran Away." The last, a novelty song, is typical of her soft/loud style, contrasting a quiet ballad beginning with her noisy, raucous manner to comic effect. She reproduces that approach frequently, but not always; sometimes she plays it straight. The collection also includes her performances from the soundtrack to Annie Get Your Gun, randomly sequenced along with her solo recordings. Annotator Neil Kellas credits her duet partner Howard Keel, who is heard on "Anything You Can Do" and "They Say It's Wonderful," but her several other singing companions go unmentioned, so it's worth noting that "A Bushel and a Peck" features Perry Como and "The Honeymoon's Over" (a proto-rock & roll number) is a duet with "Tennessee" Ernie Ford, while Dinah Shore, Tony Martin, and Phil Harris pitch in on "The Musicians," and Keel, Louis Calhern, and Keenan Wynn actually have the lion's share of "There's No Business Like Show Business." ~ William Ruhlmann
